NSW miners and their families will support the Newcastle Knights from home this year as the mining industry continues to do its part to help keep the community safe and the economy moving.
The Newcastle Knights will wear the replica hi-vis mining jersey against the North Queensland Cowboys at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday at the annual Voice for Mining Family Day.
Miners and their families are usually urged to attend the annual Voice for Mining Family Day to support the team and celebrate the good things mining brings to NSW.
However, the Newcastle Knights and the NSW Minerals Council have agreed that mining families won’t be invited to attend this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and to minimise movement of people around NSW.
“It’s a special day for our 40,000 NSW miners and their families and we’re disappointed they won’t be able to attend as usual,” Mr Galilee said.
“It’s always so good to see thousands of miners and Knights fans in hi-vis at the game. But this year we’re asking mining families to cheer on the team from home.
“Mining has continued safe operations during the pandemic with special health and safety protocols. It’s been a big effort to adapt to new ways of doing things. We thank our miners and the dier community for their efforts.
“Everyone’s health and safety will continue to be our number one priority.”
Newcastle Knights CEO Philip Gardner commended the commitment shown by miners responding to coronavirus across NSW.
“The NSW mining industry continues employing tens of thousands of people and it’s vital to the state’s economy, especially during this challenging time,” Mr Gardner said.
“Voice for Mining Family Day has become a great tradition. It’s one of the club’s biggest games of the season, especially because so many former players have found careers in the industry.
“And while this year will be different, I know the team will wear the hi-vis mining jersey with pride for the mining families cheering from home.
“We look forward to welcoming mining families back to McDonald Jones Stadium again soon. We will continue to follow the health advice from government officials and guidance from the NRL to ensure the health and safety of all of our fans and members.”
