April 11, 2019

Thousands of miners, mining suppliers and their families will join rugby league fans this Saturday in wearing hi-vis as they cheer on two great Hunter teams - the Newcastle Knights and our hardworking NSW miners.

The seventh annual Voice for Mining Family Day is on at McDonald Jones Stadium this Saturday and once again, the Knights will take the field against Manly wearing their special bright orange ‘hi-vis’ miners jerseys to show their support for our NSW miners, and all the good things mining brings to the Hunter and to our State.

Traditionally regarded as the “sons of coal miners”, the Newcastle Knights and the miners of the Hunter have a strong connection.

“There is a strong bond between the club and our industry, with so many current and former players having worked at our mines including Bill Peden, Steve Simpson, Nathan Ross and Josh King. That bond continues to grow through this partnership,” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said.

Newcastle Knights CEO Mr Philip Gardner said that the Knights are very proud to support mining communities in the Hunter and across the State.

“The contribution our miners make is vital to our country’s economic prosperity. Equally their support for our Club and our game is vital to our success,” Mr Gardner said.

“We are proud to wear the hi-vis mining jersey. Mining is great for our region and it’s great for our country. When mining is strong, Australia is strong and when the Knights are supported by mining, our club is strong.”

Gates open at 12:30pm with kick-off at 5:30pm.
