‘Voice for Mining Family Day’ back  - 9 June 2018

Every team needs great supporters.  Go Knights! Go Miners!

Rugby League fans will have the opportunity to cheer for two great teams - the Newcastle Knights and our NSW Miners - at the annual Voice for Mining Family Day at McDonald Jones Stadium on June 9.

Last year around 20,000 fans packed the Knights home ground to celebrate Voice for Mining Family Day, and another big crowd is expected again this year for the Knights Round 14 clash with the Sydney Roosters.

The Knights will again take the field in their special high-vis replica mining jersey in support of the region’s miners and all the good things mining brings to NSW.  Thousands of miners and their families along with thousands more that work in mining-related businesses are expected to join Knights fans and wear bright orange to the game to support the Knights and our mining communities.

As part of the Voice for Mining partnership the Knights will also wear their high-vis replica miners jersey for their 21 April, Round 7 away game against the West Tigers in Tamworth, another important mining region.

Now in its sixth year, the Voice for Mining Family Day highlights the strong connection between the Newcastle Knights and the Hunter mining sector. As a former Hunter miner, Knights winger, Nathan Ross has a first hand understanding of how important mining is to the region.

“I worked as an underground miner, so I understand that mining is the beating heart of the Hunter and really important to thousands of families across the region. This partnership with NSW Mining is not only important to the Knights but to the thousands of miners and their families across the Hunter that contribute so much to the region,” Nathan Ross said today.

“We’re calling on all our mining families and supporters of mining to wear orange and high-vis workwear to the game or grab a vest at the gate to show everyone just how important mining is to the Hunter,” Ross added.

NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said the Voice for Mining Family Day will again be a fun and positive event for the Hunter community, as well as a chance for miners, their families and the local community to show their support for the people that make up our local mining industry.

“The Knights and our miners are both integral to the local community.  With healthy commodity prices, strong demand for NSW coal and more mining jobs in the Hunter, this is a great opportunity to celebrate the enormous contribution mining makes to our State.  It’s also a chance to show our support for our local miners, their families and local supply businesses,” he said.
