Knights trial game in key mining community - Maitland

Every team needs great supporters.  Go Knights!  Go Miners!

The mining community of Maitland will welcome the Newcastle Knights as they take on the Parramatta Eels in their first open trial match this Saturday at Maitland Sports Ground.

Maitland has a long and proud mining history which continues today. Around 2,000 Hunter Valley miners and their families live in Maitland, and the industry spends around $500 million with around 470 local Maitland businesses each year.

The Newcastle Knights have a strong connection with the Hunter mining sector. This has been on display for the past five years through the sponsorship partnership between the Newcastle Knights and NSW Mining. This includes the annual Voice for Mining Family Day when the Knights and fans wear mining hi-vis gear to a home game to show their support for mining in NSW.

As a former Hunter miner, Knights winger, Nathan Ross has a first hand understanding of how important mining is to the region.

“I worked as an underground miner, so I understand that mining is the beating heart of the Hunter and really important to thousands of families across the region. This partnership with NSW Mining is not only important to the Knights but to the thousands of miners and their families in towns like Maitland that contribute so much to the Hunter,” Nathan Ross said today.

NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said the Knights visit to Maitland is a chance for miners, their families and the local community to show their support for the people that make up our local mining industry.

“The Knights and our miners are both integral to communities like Maitland.  With healthy commodity prices, strong demand for NSW coal and more mining jobs in the Hunter, this is a great opportunity to celebrate this contribution and show support for our local miners, their families and businesses in Maitland,” he said.
