Raelene O’Brien - 2016 NSW Exceptional Woman in Mining

Group Manager Technical Services (South), Glencore Coal Assets Australia

After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) with Honours from the University of NSW, Raelene has been promoted through a number of operating and technical services roles in coal mining and is renowned for her proven track record of mine planning and technical services management. In her current role, she is responsible for defining and driving technical principles, standards, and deliverables for technical services across all of Glencore’s NSW operations.
 
Of note, Rae was the first female in NSW to gain a 2nd Class Mine Manager’s Certificate and was also one of the first female production superintendents in the industry. Beyond being a role model for women in mining, she has for the past two years invested her time as a mentor for the WIMnet Mentoring Program. 
 
As the Technical Services mentor for graduates at Glencore, she actively supports and provides advice to young professionals entering our industry. Rae has also promoted the resources sector as a guest speaker at industry forums and careers events.
