PAC verdict on MTW announced

October 22, 2015

The Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) has announced this week that the Mount Thorley Warkworth continuation project can be approved subject to strict conditions.

This is welcome news for the 1300 local workers and their families who now have hope for the future, along with hundreds of their fellow Upper Hunter residents employed by local businesses that supply the Mount Thorley Warkworth mine.

Last year alone, the Mount Thorley Warkworth operation spent $154 million with more than 196 local supplier businesses in the Upper Hunter region.

Throughout the assessment process, the Mount Thorley Warkworth continuation project has had strong support from the local community with thousands of submissions lodged with the PAC in support of the project.

Research conducted by by ReachTel across the Singleton Local Government Area in June of this year, found 67 per cent support for the continuation of the project.  The research also found that the vast majority of respondents, nearly 87%, believed mining was ‘important’ or ‘very important’ for the Singleton economy.

Final approval of this project is now needed to provide certainty for thousands of local families, and to secure the economic future of the region.

The PAC’s full recommendation can be viewed online here
