Future of the Black Coal Ball Secure

March 20, 2015

The future of the popular Black Coal Ball, an iconic event in the Hunter that helps raise money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, has been secured for the next three years.

As part of the NSW Minerals Council’s sponsorship of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, the Council has partnered with the Black Coal Ball to keep the event running for the next three years.

“There are miners and many others across the Hunter who owe their lives to the quick action and dedication of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.  We are proud to support the Black Coal Ball as it continues to raise money for the Service,” NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said today.

Black Coal Ball organisers Joe and Margaret Matthews have been working with the mining community raising money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for 15 years and together they've raised $1.5 million through the Black Coal Golf Cup and the Black Coal Ball.

Joe Matthews is a technician at Bengalla and has been in mining for 30 years. Margaret hails from a family representing three generations of miners and she and Joe are a great example of the people in our mining community working hard to make a difference for the better.

“As a miner, its reassuring to know that if I was ever in need, the angels from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter would be on the scene quick smart to help me out.  It’s a service that our entire community should be grateful for and we feel privileged to be able to help raise money through the Black Coal Ball and the Black Coal Golf Cup,” Joe said.

“I’d encourage everyone to get in quick and book their tickets to event which promises to be a fantastic night.  The Black Coal Ball will be held at the Muswellbrook RSL Club on 27th June 2015,” he said.

Tickets are $130 each or $1300 for a table of ten. All money raised goes to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Tickets can be booked at the Muswellbrook RSL or by emailing aberbrook2@bigpond.com.

The Black Coal Golf Cup will be held at Muswellbrook Golf Course on 1 September 2015.  This event has been running for around 15 years and the Black Coal Ball for 11 years.
