Encouraging community discussion on Upper Hunter air quality

October 08, 2014

Upper Hunter residents are invited to discuss practical ways of understanding, monitoring and managing air quality with industry and government representatives at two community sessions to be held next week in Muswellbrook and Singleton.
The sessions are an initiative of the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue Joint Working Group on Emissions and Health to share information about air quality monitoring, management and research with interested members of the community.
The program for next week’s sessions includes speakers from the mining industry and both the Office of Environment and Heritage and the Department of Planning and Environment.  There will be plenty of opportunities for people attending to ask questions to all the speakers.
Peter Forbes Safety Health and Environment Manager at Anglo American's Drayton mine and Hunter resident will present on air quality initiatives currently underway in the region.
"I have lived in the Valley for over 15 years, initially in Muswellbrook and now in Singleton and have raised my family here, so air quality is an important issue for us”, says Peter.
Having lived and worked in the Upper Hunter for more than a decade, Peter has seen a significant change, with industry, government and community groups now working much more closely to address concerns about air quality.
“Over the last four years, both through industry and government taking action, significant steps have been taken to improve our understanding of the region's air quality and to address community concerns. I hope that people will take this opportunity to come along to hear about what is being done, ask questions and contribute to the conversation about air quality in the Upper Hunter."
The sessions will be carried out in both Muswellbrook and Singleton. No RSVPs necessary.
