Rescue Helicopter called to Health and Safety Conference

May 20, 2014

A crack team of emergency services personnel has shown just how important training and collaboration is to our industry at the NSW Mining Health and Safety Conference.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service flew into Cessnock to join the NSW Mines Rescue team from Coal Services in a mock rescue, following a simulated vehicle accident.

A female driver had crashed her car in the simulation and needed to be airlifted from the scene to hospital, sparking the involvement of the helicopter service. The two teams worked seamlessly together

"Fortunately, this was only a simulation in an exercise to demonstrate the collaboration between these two very crucial services for the NSW coal industry," NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said.

Mines Rescue has also released an updated manual on ‘Mines Rescue, Gas Detection and Emergency Preparedness’. The manual expands on the 1998 publication ‘A manual on Mines Rescue, Safety and Gas Detection’ which was a compilation based on decades of practical knowledge, experience and application.

‘Mines Rescue, Gas Detection and Emergency Preparedness’ is now the most comprehensive mine emergency manual available internationally. The manual covers subjects including mining emergency management, rescue equipment, firefighting, gases, gas detection, gas analysis and interpretation, self-escape, aided escape and rescue systems, spontaneous combustion, explosions, outbursts, the effect of heat and humidity on rescuers and inertisation and sealing.

"Over time the fundamental physics and chemistry of mine fires and explosions have not changed but technology is changing at a rapid pace. It was time again to revise the manual," said Paul Healey, Mines Rescue and Regulation & Compliance General Manager.

NSW Minerals Council CEO, Stephen Galilee said the new manual would help to make mines safer, particularly underground mines, by providing controls for mine incidents and prevent disasters.

The new manual can be ordered through the NSW Mines Rescue website.
