Weekend's largest NRL crowd gather for Voice for Mining Family Day 2014

June 10, 2014

More than 22,000 footy fans and mining supporters have come together to cheer on two great teams - the Knights and our NSW Miners - at the second annual Voice For Mining Family Day.

And, as one of the Knights’ largest turnouts this season and the biggest NRL crowd for the weekend, it made for an electric atmosphere at the Hunter Stadium.

Despite narrowly missing out on a win the Knights gave it their all, and decked out in their hi-vis replica miners jerseys the boys made a strong visual impact as they played against a backdrop of miners and their families in their own hi-vis gear.

The message of the day was clear - the support for mining and footy in the Hunter is as strong as ever, as Kurt Gidley reiterated in the Daily Telegraph, saying “the mining industry is huge in the Hunter region and rugby league is also really important to the people of the Hunter.”

There was something for everyone at the event, as kids joined in the fun at our ‘Miners World’, where they learnt from real miners about how our equipment and machinery works, dressed up in their high-vis miners gear and some even had their photos taken behind the wheel of some of the latest mining vehicles. Could they be future miners or NRL players? It’s anyone’s guess, so for those kids feeling energetic, our pass the ball game was perfect to get them ready for kick-off.

And there was excitement on the pitch before the game, as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service delivered three generations of miners from a local family onto the field with the game ball for the firstgrade encounter between the Newcastle Knights and the Wests Tigers.

We want to extend a massive thankyou to everyone who has supported Voice For Mining Family Day - our miners, their families and friends as well as the media, The Newcastle Knights and their loyal supporters, who all help to make our annual Voice for Mining Family Day a great success.

We would also like to thank the following companies who helped make the day possible:

It’s just another way we’re standing up for our industry, our state and over 23,000 mineworkers who work hard everyday to keep the NSW economy strong.
