Over 50 entries received for annual NSW Women in Mining Awards

An increasing number of women are being nominated for recognition of their work in the mining industry, with a large number of entries received for the 2014 NSW Women in Mining Awards.

“The NSW Women in Mining Awards continue to go from strength to strength. Nominations have more than doubled since last year, a testament to the achievements of the women that make such an important contribution to our industry”, NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said today.      

Nominations were extended by a week due to popular demand with more than 50 entries received in four categories - Rising Star, Aspiring Star, Outstanding Woman and Outstanding Initiative.

And in a demonstration of the number and quality of young women that are now making their mark in mining, we’ve received 30 nominations for the Rising Star Award which recognises the achievements of women that have recently joined our workforce.

“The awards, proudly sponsored by BHP Billiton NSW Energy Coal, recognise the achievements of women in NSW mining in various stages of their careers, as well as company initiatives that support or retain women working in mining.”

Judging the awards will be Helen Conway, a Director at the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, Joanne Flitcroft, Special Counsel at Sparke Helmore Lawyers, and David Down, General Manager at Aurizon.   

Winners will be announced on 6 March at the 2014 NSW Women in Mining Awards dinner in Sydney, sponsored by Northparkes Mines, where the achievements of all the nominees will be celebrated.

Keynote speaker at the dinner will be the inspirational 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng, thanks to Glencore.

“Marita has encouraged thousands of girls worldwide to consider engineering as a career. She’ll share her journey and experiences as a successful young female in a male-dominated industry,” Mr Galilee said.
