NSW Mining supports miners putting pen to paper to save their jobs

May 31, 2013

Voices of the Hunter’s mining community were heard loud and clear in State Parliament yesterday as more than 1500 miners called on the NSW Government to take action and safeguard their jobs at Rio Tinto Coal & Allied Mt Thorley Warkworth Operations.

A petition tabled in NSW Parliament yesterday and signed by 1544 people has called upon the NSW Government to act to save the jobs of the workers at the Mount Thorley-Warkworth mine.
NSW Mining supports this action by miners at the Mount Thorley-Warkworth mine following a recent decision by the Land and Environment Court that has directly put 1300 jobs at risk and potentially many more across that local Hunter community.
Approval to extend the mine was recently overturned by the Land and Environment Court despite having received all necessary state and federal approvals following an extensive assessment process spanning nearly three years.
NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee welcomed the miners’ initiative and supported their direct call for action from the NSW Government to save the mine and their jobs.
“We support these hard working miners in calling on the NSW Government to take action to ensure the Warkworth expansion’s approval is upheld, which will save jobs and protect the Hunter economy,’ Mr Galilee said.
“If mining and other industries in NSW are not supported by policies that encourage investment, including a decent planning system, we’ll see jobs and investment head interstate or overseas.
“And it is now more important than ever to provide a voice for mining within our communities. NSW Mining’s new website www.voiceformining.com.au helps harness online the grass-roots voices of support for mining that we know are out there.”
