2013 has been challenging for mining in the Hunter. That’s why it’s been great to see hundreds of Hunter residents sign up to become a Voice for Mining this yeartaking up the opportunity to make their support for the mining industry heard loud and clear. Thanks to everyone who has responded to the call and joined the campaign to raise the voice for mining in the Hunter this year.

No doubt there will be more challenges for our industry next year as well, so it’s important that the Hunter mining community continues to work together.

To help us meet the challenges ahead I urge everyone who cares about the local mining industry to keep reading Coalface, and to make sure their voice is heard by registering at voiceformining.com.au

As we approach the end of a long and tough year, I’d also like to wish all Hunter families a happy and restful Christmas.  It’s a time of year to spend with family, catch up with mates, and reflect on the important things in life.
It’s also a great time of year to help out those who may need a hand.  Maybe you’ll have an opportunity to donate your time or money to some of the great charities around the Hunter. In the past, Hunter mining employees have contributed to the Muswellbrook PCYC Christmas Appeal, the Singleton Women With Cancer Support Group and Clean Up Australia Day.

Maybe there’s something each of us could do to spread some good cheer and support our local community these holidays.
For Christmas this year I will be asking for a higher coal price, a lower Aussie dollar, and a new planning system that protects mining jobs. Oh, and a new XBox.
Merry Christmas to you all. Let's make the voice for mining roar in 2014!
