Regional Collaboration on Infrastructure
In addition to regular business taxes, the mining industry also returns mining royalties to the NSW Government, which helps to fund essential services and infrastructure across the state.
The Upper Hunter region generated $819 million in royalties in 2011-12, around 56% of the all royalties paid in NSW. Despite this enormous contribution to NSW, the region has historically received a disproportionate amount of NSW and Commonwealth government investment.
The NSW Minerals Council and Upper Hunter councils have been working hard to call for a better deal for the region. This has led to increased funding, including $26 million from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions fund and $23 million from the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment fund in 2013-14.
