Projects and Information

When the Dialogue was established in 2011, four key themes were initially focused on, with a number of projects undertaken and overseen by Working Groups under each theme.

As the Dialogue continues to evolve and respond to the community's needs, a number of organisational realignments have occured. In response to stakeholder feedback, the Dialogue has focused on establishing two emerging themes, supported by Working Groups:

  1. Communications and Stakeholder Engagement - Improve general community understanding of mining industry practices through provision of informative and educational resources; and
  2. Economic and Social Development - Building resilience and planning for long-term final land use in the Upper Hunter post-mining, with a strong initial focus on local procurement and improving the opportunities for local businesses in the region.
The Dialogue has also consolidated all key Environment themes (i.e. Water, Land Management, and Emissions and Health) into a single Environment theme, supported by Working Groups. Information on the Environment theme objectives and projects is outlined below, as well as a former theme looking at Social Impacts and Infrastructure can be contained below.

Water
As part of the broader Environment theme, the Dialogue works to address issues and concerns raised regarding Water under the following two objectives:
  1. Develop a better understanding of the region’s water resources and the existing and potential impacts of development on the Hunter Valley catchment.
  2. Demonstrate and promote responsible and efficient use and management of water in the Hunter Valley.
There are a number of projects underway to achieve these goals.

Social Impacts and Infrastructure
While the Social Impacts and Infrastructure group is now in abeyance, the group worked on two goals:
1.     Facilitate structured discussions between councils, business chambers and industry to better understand community infrastructure requirements, priorities and lend industry weight to lobby for infrastructure.
2.     Undertake a study to assess the impacts of the growth of the industry in the Upper Hunter, with a focus on social impacts.
A number of reports and studies were completed by the group.

Land Management
As part of the broader Environment theme, the Dialogue works to address issues and concerns raised regarding Land Management under the following three objectives:
  1. Decrease the time that disturbed areas are left without temporary or final cover, recognising that different mining operations are at different points in rehabilitation;
  2. Provide transparent and reliable information through the Rehabilitation Reporting Principles;
  3. Achieve a consistent level of best practice, quality, integrated rehabilitation across the Upper Hunter (within industry and with future land uses) and to be a responsible steward of the land.
There are a number of projects underway to achieve these goals.

Emissions and Health
As part of the broader Environment theme, the Dialogue works to address issues and concerns raised regarding Emissions and Health under the following two objectives:
  1. Develop a better understanding in the industry and the community of mining related emissions.
  2. Manage mining operations to achieve consistent, continuous improvement of mining related emissions levels that demsonstartes best practice and meets operational excellence.
