New research highlights strong future for NSW coal exports

September 11, 2019

A report by independent research company Commodity Insights has found that the current power generation policies of governments in the Asia Pacific region will drive an increase in demand for thermal coal imports of 495 million tonnes across the region by 2040, presenting significant growth opportunities for NSW coal exports, the NSW economy, and regional mining communities.

Community

Many of the towns in regional NSW have family links to mining going back generations and unlike other states, the thousands of people working in NSW mines live locally as part of the community. Our kids go to local schools, we play in sports teams and we meet friends at local cafes and clubs.

Just like our miners, mining companies have invested significant resources in our mining communities because contributing to positive local initiatives and ongoing community development is important to us. You can learn more about how we’re working with the community at World Class Miners, and learn about partnership opportunities.

Mines across NSW strive to operate with the support of the community and continually work to understand and meet the community’s expectations. We want to be part of strong and sustainable towns and economies, not just now but for the future too. That’s why we work with community leaders to help ensure services and infrastructure are adequate for a strong and prosperous regional NSW.

The growth of mining has led to some challenges, especially in places where mining is concentrated like the Upper Hunter region of NSW. We’re working with residents, other industries, regulators and business and community leaders there to address specific community concerns through the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue
